A stone throw away from Plaza de Mayo is the beautiful city museum. Located in the heart of the historical quarter of Buenos Aires, this museum is just minutes away from the most frequented sites in the city: Plaza de Mayo, Pink House, house of government, Cabildo and the beautiful Avenida de Mayo, all of which are lively examples of the outstanding urban development that took place in the last decades of the 19th century in our city.

The Museum of the City was created in 1968, by the local authorities seeking to preserve the rich and wonderful history of Buenos Aires thru means of the conservation of the material remains of the people who lived in the country’s capital. For the first couple of years, the Museum was set in a provisory location, until 1973 when it was finally set in its actual location on Alsina 412. The Museum was originally a family house built around 1894, and it is preserved in its most original features. On the ground floor at the corner of Defensa and Alsina is the famous and beautiful La Estrella Pharmacy featuring the original décor and furniture, and still works as a pharmacy supplying the neighbors with their recipes as any drugstore. The neighboring houses of Elorriaga and Maria Josefa Ezcurra, are two early 1800 constructions together with the Casa de los Querubines from late 19th century, are all property of the Museum because of their incredible historical relevance. All of these buildings are currently undergoing a process of rehab that will result into the reconstruction of a very important historical part of our city.  This particular museum has the objective of documenting and sharing the history of the people of Buenos Aires, their customs and traditions, the way the anonymous Portenos used to live. They achieve these goals thru means of the conservation of antique every day items such as objects, photographs, texts, architectural elements, etc. The Museum’s board also created in 1970 the traditional San Pedro Telmo Fair of antiques that takes place every Sunday at Plaza Dorrego. There are two other major cultural events of the city that were conceived by the City museum, and among the finest we can spot the Arts Fair which gathers painters, sculpture makers and photographers every Friday and Sunday in San Francisco Plazoleta.

Back to the Museum, its permanent collection has a great variety of treasured items ranging from antique buttons to postcards, to furniture, tiles, popular antique mate gores and several other everyday life objects… also featuring amazing design items, publicity boards, photographs of which they have over 32,000 glass negatives, toys and of course the earliest cultural expressions of a true form of Buenos Aires art, fileteado…
